Chandigarh, December 25
To enhance animal welfare and provide comfortable healthcare settings, the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, will soon introduce indoor services at six veterinary polyclinics across the state.
Punjab Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian announced this development, stating that over ₹1.85 crore has been allocated to upgrade services and provide equipment for these polyclinics in Patiala, Amritsar, Bathinda, Sangrur, Gurdaspur, and Ludhiana. These facilities will soon offer a range of indoor services, including acute illness management, surgeries, post-operative care, lab tests, X-rays, and ultrasound facilities.

Minister Khudian also highlighted the Animal Husbandry Department’s achievements, including the free administration of goat pox vaccine (twice) to all cattle to prevent Lumpy Skin Disease. All eligible animals have also received biannual Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccinations. This year, 126.22 lakh FMD vaccine doses were administered free of charge in two rounds.
Furthermore, 175,000 doses of frozen sexed semen (for producing female calves) were procured at a cost of ₹11.81 crore to improve livestock farmers’ economic conditions and address the stray animal issue. To further enhance animal healthcare services, 326 new Veterinary Officers, 538 Veterinary Inspectors, and 59 Group C posts have been filled, with the recruitment of 405 additional Veterinary Officers currently underway.
Rahul Bhandari, Principal Secretary of the Animal Husbandry Department, added that ₹6.37 crore was used to purchase and distribute dewormers to all livestock farmers under the Mass Deworming Campaign. Additionally, ₹3 crore worth of medicines have been provided to hospitals and dispensaries for animal treatment, with another ₹1 crore allocated for further medicine purchases. The department has also organized 199 animal welfare and awareness camps across the state and is currently conducting the 21st livestock census.
Dr. G.S. Bedi, Director of the Animal Husbandry Department, noted that the department was a host partner for the first time in the tricity’s history at the Pet Expo held in Parade Ground, Chandigarh, on December 21st and 22nd, 2024.
