Indians Paying Taxes Like England, Yet Receiving Somalia-Like Facilities: Raghav Chadha

BJP Supporters Disappointed with the Budget, Says Chadha
Raghav Chadha, the Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, delivered a forceful speech in Parliament, condemning the central government’s budget and proposing economic reforms. He attributed the BJP’s recent defeat in the Lok Sabha elections to their economic policies.
Chadha criticized the budget for disappointing all sections of society, including BJP supporters. He accused the government of burdening the common man with excessive taxes while providing inadequate services in return. “Despite paying taxes similar to those in England, citizens receive facilities akin to those in Somalia,” he asserted.

According to Chadha, out of every 10 rupees earned, the government deducts a significant portion through income tax, GST, and surcharges, yet fails to deliver world-class education, health, and transport facilities.

Economic Policies and Election Outcomes
Chadha highlighted the economy as a major factor in the BJP’s electoral defeat. He emphasized the poor economic conditions in rural areas, marked by inflation, unemployment, and economic inequality. These issues, he argued, have severely impacted rural constituencies, leading to a decline in BJP seats.
“In 2019, the BJP secured 303 seats. This time, due to the imposition of an 18 percent GST, they were reduced to 240 seats,” Chadha stated. He underscored that rural wages have decreased, and inflation has risen, further eroding the purchasing power of daily wage laborers.
Food Inflation and Economic Recommendations
Chadha pointed to rising food prices as another reason for the BJP’s electoral setback. He noted that essential commodities like flour, milk, and rice have become significantly more expensive, with farmers not benefiting from these price increases.
To address these issues, Chadha offered several suggestions:
- Link Minimum Wages to Inflation: To alleviate the burden of inflation on the poor.
- Legal Guarantee of MSP: Ensure farmers receive fair prices as per the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations.
- Maintain Long-Term Capital Gain Tax: Prevent adverse effects on the real estate sector.
- Encourage Financial Savings: Promote equity, mutual funds, and bank deposits for long-term financial stability.
- Review GST Rates: Reduce GST on MSME sector-related items and eliminate GST on FMCG products.
- Fair Distribution of Funds: Avoid discrimination between states in fund allocation.
- Reduce Cess and Surcharge: Share revenue from cess and surcharges with states.
- Extend GST Compensation: Continue GST compensation to states for at least five more years.
Chadha concluded by urging the government to adopt these measures to improve the economy and better serve the citizens of India.
