Amritsar, January 14:
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced the establishment of the Surjit Patar Centre for Ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. The center will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology to advance ethical AI research, with full support from the Punjab government.
Addressing a gathering to pay homage to the legendary Punjabi writer Dr. Surjit Patar, the Chief Minister also announced the institutionalization of an award in his memory. This award will be given to budding writers to encourage their contributions to Punjabi literature.
Bhagwant Singh Mann emphasized that academic appointments in universities are being made with a focus on promoting education and eradicating factionalism in institutions. He highlighted the importance of nurturing education as the foundation for progress and justice, in line with the teachings of great Gurus, saints, and martyrs.

Tribute to Dr. Surjit Patar:
The Chief Minister described Dr. Surjit Patar as a luminary of Punjabi literature, whose passing represents an irreparable loss to the literary world. He recalled the writer’s profound influence on Punjabi culture and his personal bond with the late literary icon. Bhagwant Singh Mann remarked, “What Keats was for the English language, Dr. Surjit Patar was for Punjabi. He was a masterful writer who used his pen to promote communal harmony and brotherhood.”
The Chief Minister lauded Dr. Patar’s unparalleled contributions to Punjabi literature and culture, emphasizing his lasting legacy as a source of inspiration for future generations of writers.
Promotion of Punjabi Language:
Mann reiterated the state government’s commitment to promoting Punjabi as the mother tongue. He announced a financial allocation of over ₹350 crore to Punjabi University, Patiala, to alleviate its financial challenges and allow faculty to focus on advancing Punjabi education.
He urged students to speak and write in Punjabi to preserve and celebrate their rich cultural heritage. “Punjabi is a remarkable language with a treasure trove of literature that reflects our glorious history and traditions,” he added.
Honoring the 40 Muktas on Maghi:
Extending greetings on the occasion of Maghi, the Chief Minister paid tribute to the 40 Muktas (liberated ones) who made the ultimate sacrifice in the battle of Khidrana, now Sri Muktsar Sahib. He noted that the annual observance at Gurdwara Sri Tuti-Gandi Sahib honors their valiant fight against oppression.
A Call for Unity and Inspiration:
The Chief Minister concluded by urging the youth to draw inspiration from Punjab’s martyrs and to serve their nation with dedication. He celebrated Punjab as a land of harmony where people from diverse backgrounds coexist peacefully.
