Rupnagar Girls Win Punjab State Gatka Championship, Fazilka Finish Runners-up

The 12th Punjab State Gatka Championship (Girls) concluded with great enthusiasm at Gurukul Group of Institutes, Kotkapura, in Faridkot district. Rupnagar emerged as the overall champions after a series of thrilling and closely contested matches that showcased exceptional skill and discipline.

Fazilka secured the runner-up position, while Gurdaspur and Fatehgarh Sahib shared third place. The results highlighted the growing competitive strength and depth of Gatka across Punjab.

The closing ceremony was presided over by Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, who also inaugurated the final match. In his address, he emphasized that Gatka is not merely a sport but a complete way of life deeply rooted in discipline, spirituality, and self-defence. He encouraged young players to stay connected with their faith and uphold the values of a true Gursikh life.

The Speaker also appreciated the efforts of the National Gatka Association of India for promoting the sport at the national level and providing structured platforms for young talent.

  • Best Junior Gatkabaz: Gursimran Kaur (Fazilka)
  • Best Farri Stick Player: Anukirat Kaur (Ludhiana)
  • Best Player: Pavneet Kaur (Rupnagar)
  • Best Gatka Stick Player: Ishpreet Kaur (Rupnagar)
  • Best Sub-Junior Star: Sehaj Kaur (Fatehgarh Sahib)

Advocate Harjeet Singh Grewal, President of the World Gatka Federation and National Gatka Association of India, spoke about the rapid development of Gatka as a modern competitive sport and outlined plans to expand its presence in international arenas.

State Gatka Association President Harbir Singh Duggal and Senior Vice President Dr. Manjit Singh Dhillon also addressed the gathering. Dr. Dhillon announced that his institutions would provide free education to winning Gatka players and offered to host the next state championship in Kotkapura.

The championship was organized efficiently under the supervision of Chief Referee Talwinder Singh, Competition Coordinator Narinder Pal Singh, and other senior referees.

More than 250 girls from 11 districts participated in the two-day event. Managing Director of Gurukul Institute Dr. Pritam Singh Chhokar and Administrative Director Harpreet Singh Dhillon expressed satisfaction over the successful conduct of the championship, which continues to strengthen Gatka as both a competitive sport and a cherished cultural tradition.
