The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Chandigarh, has welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approval to increase the number of MBBS seats at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, describing it as a landmark decision that will strengthen medical education and help meet the country’s growing demand for qualified doctors.
In a joint statement, Dr. Ramneek Singh Bedi, National Chairman, IMA AMS and nominated Councillor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, Dr. Anil Kumar, President, IMA Chandigarh, and Dr. Gulpreet Kaur, Honorary Secretary, IMA Chandigarh, said the move represents a major milestone in India’s healthcare and medical education sectors.
They stated that expanding MBBS seats at one of the country’s premier medical institutions will enable more deserving students to pursue medical education while creating a larger pool of skilled healthcare professionals for the future.
The IMA leaders also welcomed the strengthening of PGIMER’s Mother and Child Health Centre and Neurology Department, noting that India’s rising population and increasing healthcare needs make the expansion of medical education and infrastructure more important than ever. They described the Prime Minister’s decision as a forward-looking initiative that will significantly enhance the nation’s healthcare delivery system.

Expressing satisfaction over PGIMER’s continuous growth and development, they said the institute has consistently maintained its reputation as a centre of excellence in medical education, research, and patient care. The IMA Chandigarh office-bearers thanked the Central Government for the decision and expressed hope that similar initiatives would be undertaken in the future to further strengthen medical education, healthcare infrastructure, and access to quality medical services across India.
