Dev Kumar Meena of Madhya Pradesh has broken the national record in men’s pole vault en route to winning the gold medal at the National Games 2025 in Uttarakhand.
The 19-year-old Meena cleared a height of 5.32m, surpassing the previous national record of 5.31m set by Subramani Siva of Tamil Nadu at the 2022 National Games.
Meena expressed joy at achieving the national record, acknowledging the long journey and the support of his family and coach. He emphasized the struggles he faced coming from a farming family and his determination to do something extraordinary.

Meena, whose previous personal best was 5.20m, also won gold in the same event at the 2023 National Games in Goa. He won bronze at the 2024 Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Dubai, becoming the first Indian male pole vaulter in 38 years to reach the podium at that level.
G Reegan of Tamil Nadu (5.00m) and Kuldeep Kumar of Uttar Pradesh (5.00m) won the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
In women’s hammer throw, Anushka Yadav of Uttar Pradesh set a new National Games record with a throw of 62.89m, surpassing the previous record of 62.47m set by Tanya Chaudhary in 2023. Chaudhary (59.74m) won silver this year, and Nandini (58.89m) took bronze.
Asian Games gold medalist Tajinderpal Singh Toor of Punjab won gold in the men’s shot put with a throw of 19.74m. Toor, also a gold medalist at the 2022 National Games, holds the national record of 21.77m. Samardeep Singh Gill of Madhya Pradesh (19.38m) and Prabhkirpal Singh of Punjab (19.04m) won silver and bronze, respectively.
The National Games 2025, which began on January 28, will end on February 14.
