In a commanding performance, South Africa launched their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a resounding 107-run victory over debutants Afghanistan in Group B. Rickelton’s Maiden Century Sets the Tone

The highlight of South Africa’s innings was Ryan Rickelton’s sensational knock of 103 runs off 106 deliveries , laced with seven fours and one six . The 28-year-old anchored the innings, leading the charge alongside skipper Temba Bavuma , who contributed a steady 58 off 76 balls . The duo stitched together a crucial 129-run partnership for the second wicket after the early dismissal of Tony de Zorzi in the powerplay.

Rickelton’s stellar knock came to an end when Rashid Khan executed a brilliant run-out off his own bowling, dismissing the centurion in style. Despite this, South Africa’s total of 315/6 proved more than enough to overpower Afghanistan.

Proteas’ Bowlers Seal the Deal

Defending a massive target, South Africa’s bowlers delivered a clinical performance. Pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada led the charge with a three-wicket haul, dismantling Afghanistan’s top order. Lungi Ngidi and Wiaan Mulder chipped in with two wickets each, while Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj also got among the wickets.

The Proteas’ fielding was equally impressive, with Marco Jansen producing a direct hit to dismiss Rahmat Shah , who had been Afghanistan’s lone warrior with a gritty 90 off 92 balls . Skipper Temba Bavuma also pulled off a stunning catch at mid-on to send back Afghanistan’s captain Hashmatullah Shahidi for a duck.

Despite Rahmat’s valiant effort, which included nine boundaries and a six , Afghanistan’s chase faltered as wickets fell at regular intervals. The innings eventually folded for 208 , with Rabada cleaning up the tail to seal the victory.
