Mastering Photography: Skills Through Dedication

The Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University in collaboration with the Zoological and Environmental Society, organized a one-day Professional Photography Workshop today.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Onkar Singh Brraich, Head of the Department and Convener of the event. He highlighted that photography is an indispensable tool in zoology and wildlife studies and urged students to master its technical and artistic aspects. Dr. Brraich also announced that a department-level photography competition will soon be held to motivate students.

The keynote session was delivered by renowned wildlife photographer, zoologist, and teacher-educator Dr. Jeesu Jaskanwar Singh from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Speaking on “Professional Photography,” Dr. Jeesu emphasized that outstanding images are the result of dedication and deliberate practice. He covered essential topics including:

  • Mastering exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)
  • Choosing the right lens for perspective and depth of field
  • Shooting confidently in manual mode
  • Composition techniques: achieving visual balance, eliminating distractions, and using colour and contrast effectively
  • Understanding and harnessing natural light, predicting its changes, and supplementing with artificial lighting
  • Evolution of camera technology and its impact on modern photography

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jagdeep Singh conveyed his best wishes for the success of the workshop.

The stage was gracefully conducted by Dr. Meenakshi Bharti (Organizing Secretary), while Dr. Abhinav Saxena, Assistant Professor, introduced the chief guest. Prof. Himender Bharti was also present on the occasion. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Dalveer Singh, Assistant Professor.

Over 110 participants, including students, research scholars, faculty members, and non-teaching staff of the department, enthusiastically attended the workshop and greatly benefited from the expert insights.

The event proved to be an inspiring step toward blending scientific observation with the art of photography in the field of zoology and environmental sciences.
