In a significant step towards strengthening medical education and public healthcare infrastructure in Punjab, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has approved the creation of 110 new Junior Resident (JR) posts at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), SAS Nagar (Mohali). With this approval, the sanctioned strength of Junior Residents at the institute will increase from 97 to 207.
Harpal Singh Cheema said the Punjab Government is committed to strengthening the state’s medical education and healthcare system. He said that following affiliation approvals from Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) and the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) across 24 departments, the annual postgraduate intake at AIMS Mohali has increased to 69 seats.

According to the Finance Minister, the expanded postgraduate programme requires a working strength of 207 postgraduate and Junior Resident doctors over the standard three-year academic cycle.
He said AIMS Mohali currently has 97 sanctioned Junior Resident posts. Against an annual intake of 38 academic residents, the existing strength works out to 114 residents across the three-year training cycle.
With the introduction of new postgraduate courses and expansion of departments, the projected requirement of Junior Residents has been estimated at 147 for the 2026-27 academic session, 177 for 2027-28 and 207 for 2028-29.
“To meet the immediate requirement of 147 seats during the ongoing academic session, the government has approved the creation of 110 new posts,” Cheema said.
He further pointed out that seven regular/post-diploma Junior Residents are scheduled to complete their tenure during the current academic session. Of these, six are expected to be relieved in October 2026, while one will complete the tenure in December 2026.
The Finance Minister said strengthening the resident doctor workforce is essential to ensure continuity in clinical services and patient care at the institute.
He added that the proposal submitted by the Department of Medical Education and Research has been approved with the objective of ensuring that state-run medical institutions have adequate specialised human resources, improved training opportunities and strengthened healthcare delivery for the public.
