Cricket Secured for Asian Games 2026, MMA to Debut in Aichi-Nagoya

Nagoya, April 29, 2025

Cricket has been officially retained for the Asian Games 2026, marking its fourth appearance at the continental multi-sport event, while Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will make its debut, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced on Tuesday. The 2026 Asian Games are set to take place in Japan’s Aichi and Nagoya prefectures from September 19 to October 4, 2026.

The decision was finalized during the 41st meeting of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Organizing Committee (AINAGOC) Board of Directors at Nagoya City Hall on April 28, 2025. “The sports programme was updated with the formal approval of cricket and Mixed Martial Arts,” the OCA stated, confirming their inclusion in the 2026 lineup.

Cricket at Asian Games 2026

Cricket’s inclusion in the Asian Games 2026 follows its appearances at Guangzhou 2010, Incheon 2014, and Hangzhou 2023. Despite its massive popularity across Asia, the sport has featured in only three of the 19 previous Asian Games editions. The 2026 edition will see cricket matches hosted in Aichi, though specific venues are yet to be confirmed.

  • Historical Context:
    • Guangzhou 2010: Cricket debuted as a medal event in the T20 format for men and women, marking its first inclusion in the Asian Games.

    • Hangzhou 2023: Cricket made a triumphant return after being excluded in Jakarta 2018, with all matches granted international status by the ICC, elevating the event’s prestige.
  • Format and Legacy:
    • Cricket at the Asian Games has consistently featured separate men’s and women’s T20 tournaments, aligning with the format’s global appeal.
    • At Hangzhou 2023, India clinched gold in both men’s and women’s categories, with Afghanistan (men’s) and Sri Lanka (women’s) securing silver, and Bangladesh earning bronze in both events.
  • India’s Dominance: India’s double gold in Hangzhou 2023 underscored their cricketing prowess, with the men’s team led by Ruturaj Gaikwad and the women’s team under Harmanpreet Kaur setting a high benchmark for 2026.

The sport’s only Olympic appearance was in Paris 1900, where Great Britain defeated France in a Test match to claim gold.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Debut

MMA’s inclusion marks a significant milestone for the Asian Games, introducing a dynamic combat sport to the continental stage. Classified as a discipline under Combat Sports alongside kurash and jujitsu, MMA will feature six medal events in 2026, reflecting its growing popularity in Asia and globally.

Significance for Asian Games 2026

  • Cricket’s Appeal: Cricket’s retention reinforces its status as a crowd-puller in Asia, particularly in cricket-crazy nations like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Its T20 format ensures fast-paced, spectator-friendly matches, boosting the Games’ viewership.
  • MMA’s Entry: The debut of MMA reflects the OCA’s commitment to diversifying the sports programme, appealing to younger audiences and aligning with global trends in combat sports.
  • Venue and Logistics: Aichi’s selection as the cricket hub underscores Japan’s infrastructure readiness, though the OCA is yet to finalize specific stadiums. Nagoya’s modern facilities will complement the event’s scale.
