Folk Dance Extravaganza: Luddi and Jhumar Shine

-Punjabi University Youth Festival 2nd day

The second day of the ongoing Inter-Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival at Punjabi University, Patiala, buzzed with energy as students showcased their artistic talents across multiple venues on campus.

The highlight of the day was the folk dance competitions held on the main stage of Guru Teg Bahadur Hall, where the girls enthralled the audience with the vibrant Luddi dance and the boys brought the house down with the spirited Jhumar performance, filling the atmosphere with colour, rhythm, and traditional Punjabi fervour.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Arvind visited all five competition venues and motivated the participating students. He remarked that many internationally acclaimed artists have emerged from Punjabi University’s youth festivals over the years and have taken Punjab’s rich culture to the global stage. He expressed confidence that these festivals will continue to produce world-class talent in the future while playing a vital role in preserving and promoting traditional art forms.

Prof. Bhiminder Singh, Director of Youth Welfare Department, informed that on the second day:

  • Kala Bhawan hosted Light Vocal (Solo Song), Light Vocal (Ghazal), and Group Song (Indian) competitions.
  • Sunny Obrai Arts Auditorium saw contests in Punjabi folklore & cultural short films and Punjabi idiomatic dialogue.
  • Open-Air Theatre featured Bhand (traditional folk comedy) and street play performances.
  • Punjabi Bhavan Lawn witnessed enthusiastic participation in heritage art categories that showcased Punjab’s traditional crafts and creativity, including Rangoli, clay modelling, on-the-spot painting, photography, mehndi, poster-making, cartooning, collage-making, and installation art.

Finance Officer Prof. Pramod Agrawal and Dean, Directorate of International Affairs Prof. Damanjit Sandhu graced the main stage events as guests of honour.

Other distinguished guests present at various venues included Dean Research Prof. Ritu Lehal, Director, Centre for Diaspora Studies Prof. Rajinder Singh Gill, Additional Provost Prof. Jagpreet Kaur, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Culture Prof. Jaspal Kaur Deol, NSS Coordinator Prof. Anhad Singh Gill, DPM Prof. Sukhjeet Kaur, and IAS Centre Director Prof. Ajita.
