Shreyas Iyer’s impressive half-century against England has given India’s selectors a pleasant but challenging selection headache just weeks before the start of the ICC Champions Trophy.
Iyer’s explosive 59 off 36 balls in Nagpur helped India chase down England’s total of 248 with ease, going 1-0 up in the five-match series. His opportunity arose due to Virat Kohli’s knee soreness, with Iyer receiving a last-minute call-up from captain Rohit Sharma. Iyer revealed he had been watching a movie when he got the call, highlighting the unexpected nature of his inclusion. He emphasized his readiness, drawing on his experience from the previous year’s Asia Cup, where he was injured and another player capitalized on the opportunity.

Kohli’s return from injury for the remainder of the England series and the Champions Trophy presents a selection conundrum for India. The team boasts a wealth of batting talent, and accommodating all the in-form players will be a tough task.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his ODI debut against England, is likely to be considered for the Champions Trophy due to his left-handed presence in the top order. Shubman Gill’s excellent form, highlighted by his 87-run Player of the Match performance in Nagpur, also strengthens his case.

India also has the experienced trio of KL Rahul, Rohit, and Kohli to consider, along with all-rounders Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja, who provide middle-order options.
Iyer, however, has proven his worth, having scored 530 runs in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. He attributed his strong performance against England to his consistent domestic season, which allowed him to refine his approach, mindset, and skills. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining peak fitness.
