Punjab Boosts Rural Healthcare with 10 New Mobile Medical Units

Chandigarh, February 24

In a bold move to revolutionize healthcare access in rural Punjab, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh launched 10 new Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) on Monday at Punjab Bhawan. Joined by Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO and MLAs from Mansa and Bathinda districts, Dr. Singh flagged off the initiative, aligning with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s vision to prioritize underserved communities.

A Lifeline for Mansa and Bathinda

These state-of-the-art mobile vans, launched in partnership with The Hans Foundation, are set to serve the rural regions of Mansa and Bathinda districts. Equipped with MBBS doctors, the MMUs offer:

  • Free consultations
  • 40 types of diagnostic tests
  • 220 types of free medicines
  • Specialized health awareness camps
  • Home visits for immobile patients

Designed for maximum reach, each unit will visit two villages daily, ensuring healthcare is both accessible and convenient. “These MMUs eliminate the need for people to travel long distances for medical care,” Dr. Singh emphasized, “delivering quality healthcare right to their doorsteps.”

Scaling Up: 77 MMUs Now Operational

With this launch, Punjab now boasts 77 MMUs statewide:

  • 51 supported by The Hans Foundation
  • 13 under the National Health Mission (NHM)
  • 1 sponsored by ICICI Bank
  • 1 operated by the NGO “Doctors for You”

From April 2024 to January 2025, these units have already made a massive impact, treating 4.40 lakh patients through outpatient services and conducting 1.39 lakh diagnostic tests. Dr. Singh hailed The Hans Foundation and other NGOs as “angel investors,” crediting their vital role in bolstering Punjab’s healthcare system.

Building on Aam Aadmi Clinics’ Success

The Health Minister also spotlighted the triumph of Aam Aadmi Clinics, which have served over 2.86 crore people and saved Punjabis more than ₹1,500 crore in out-of-pocket costs. “These mobile units take healthcare a step further,” he said, “bringing services directly to people’s homes and removing the burden of travel.”

This initiative marks a significant leap forward in Punjab’s mission to ensure no rural resident is left behind when it comes to quality healthcare.
