Timely Intervention, Tangible Results: NCW Addresses Critical Cases in Patiala
Patiala, June 18:
The Jan Sunwai organized by the National Commission for Women (NCW) under its ‘NCW Aapke Dwar’ initiative in Patiala resulted in prompt and meaningful action in several long-pending cases, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to ensuring timely justice for women.
During the hearing, NCW Chairperson Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar personally listened to grievances raised by women and their families and directed the concerned authorities to take immediate action in cases involving violence against women, harassment, and prolonged delays in investigations.
Appreciating the prompt response of the Punjab Police and district administration, Smt. Rahatkar emphasized that timely intervention and effective coordination between law enforcement agencies and the Commission can provide much-needed relief to victims while strengthening public confidence in the justice delivery system.
FIR Registered in Case of NRI Woman Assaulted in Canada
One of the most serious cases presented before the Commission involved the parents of a young woman who was brutally assaulted by her husband in Canada in 2024, leaving her with severe brain injuries. The victim continues to receive medical treatment in Canada.
The family informed the Commission that although a criminal case had been registered in Canada, the accused husband had fled to India. Despite pursuing the matter with local authorities for nearly two years, they had seen little progress.
Taking serious note of the complaint, the Chairperson directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Patiala, to ensure immediate action and register an FIR within 24 hours. Acting on these directions, the police promptly registered an FIR against the accused husband and his family members under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Stronger Charges Added in Stalking and Assault Case
In another case, a young woman informed the Commission that she and her family had been subjected to a violent assault by individuals who had allegedly been stalking and harassing her. Although an FIR had already been registered, the complainant alleged that appropriate legal provisions had not been invoked and that she continued to face threats and intimidation.
After hearing the matter, Smt. Rahatkar directed the concerned police authorities to immediately record the complainant’s statement and review the applicability of relevant legal provisions. The police subsequently informed the Commission that the FIR had been updated and strengthened in accordance with the complainant’s statement.
Fresh Investigative Steps in Long-Pending Missing Woman Case
The Commission also heard the plea of a mother whose married daughter has been missing since 2022. The complainant expressed concern regarding the possible involvement of the missing woman’s husband and one of his associates.
Observing that the matter had remained unresolved for several years, the Chairperson directed the concerned police officials to expedite the investigation and take all necessary steps without delay. In compliance with these directions, the police informed the Commission that the Call Detail Records (CDRs) of the husband had been sought to facilitate further investigation and advance the case.
Ensuring Timely Justice Through Direct Intervention
The swift action witnessed in these cases highlights the effectiveness of the Commission’s grassroots outreach through the ‘NCW Aapke Dwar’ initiative, which aims to bring justice mechanisms closer to women and ensure that their concerns are addressed without unnecessary delay.
Reiterating the Commission’s commitment, Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar stated that every complaint represents a woman’s faith in the justice system and must be handled promptly, fairly, and with due seriousness. She emphasized that the National Commission for Women will continue working closely with state authorities to ensure accountability, effective follow-up, and the timely resolution of cases concerning women.
The Commission also acknowledged the cooperation extended by the Punjab Police and district administration in promptly implementing the directions issued during the Jan Sunwai.
