Punjab Govt Honours 59 Outstanding Doctors with State-Level Awards on National Doctors’ Day
Chandigarh, July 2, 2026:
In a landmark initiative to recognise the exceptional contribution of medical professionals, the Punjab Government on National Doctors’ Day honoured 59 outstanding doctors from both the government and private sectors during the State-Level Doctors’ Award Ceremony held at the Municipal Bhawan in Chandigarh.
The awards have been instituted under a first-of-its-kind policy introduced by the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Government to honour doctors for their outstanding services. Under this merit-based policy, top-performing doctors from the State Health Department, Government Medical Colleges and the private sector receive a Certificate of Honour and a memento for their exemplary contribution to healthcare.
Congratulating the awardees on National Doctors’ Day, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh praised doctors for their unwavering commitment to patient care and their selfless service to society.
Highlighting notable achievements, the Health Minister commended Dr Virendra Singh, Director of the Punjab Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (PILBS), Mohali, for transforming the institute into a centre of excellence. He noted that the institute has successfully performed its first liver transplant and is preparing to begin kidney transplant services in the near future.
Dr Balbir Singh also appreciated Dr Ashish Gulia, Director of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, for strengthening cancer care across Punjab, particularly through early diagnosis and preventive healthcare initiatives.

Both initiatives, based on the hub-and-spoke model, have significantly improved emergency treatment for heart attack and stroke patients, saving thousands of lives across the state.
The Minister highlighted that under the Punjab STEMI Project, the life-saving Tenecteplase injection, which normally costs between ₹25,000 and ₹35,000, is being provided free of cost to eligible heart attack patients. Likewise, the Punjab Stroke Project offers free mechanical thrombectomy treatment for ischemic stroke patients through an advanced referral network.
Praising the medical fraternity, Dr Balbir Singh described doctors as true frontline heroes who continue to serve society during every crisis, including floods, the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergencies.
He thanked doctors for treating patients with compassion and dedication, even under the most challenging circumstances.
Reiterating the Punjab Government’s commitment to strengthening public healthcare, the Health Minister said the government is continuously working to ensure that healthcare services in government hospitals match the standards of private institutions, making quality healthcare accessible to every citizen, especially the economically weaker sections.
