In the rugged terrain of Jammu and Kashmir, Amir Ahmad Bhat’s journey stands as a powerful symbol of resilience. Once a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army, Bhat’s life changed dramatically in 2018 when a mine blast on the Line of Control left him severely injured. Yet, the 30-year-old from Anantnag refused to let this tragedy define him. Today, he is a silver medallist in the mixed 25m pistol SH1 event at the Khelo India Para Games 2025 and an inspiration for young people facing life’s toughest challenges.
Bhat’s remarkable story took him from the battlefield to the Paris 2024 Paralympics, where he became the first para shooter from the Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir to compete at the prestigious event. His latest achievement—a silver medal at the ongoing Khelo India Para Games 2025—further cements his legacy as a sharp-shooter who thrives under pressure.
“I was a sniper in the Army, skilled in firing techniques,” Bhat shared with SAI Media. “After my injury, I had no idea shooting could be a sport.” What could have been a moment of despair turned into a new beginning, thanks to a colonel who recognized his potential and introduced him to para shooting.
In just a few years, Bhat transitioned from a military marksman to a Paralympic contender. Starting para shooting in 2020, he made his international mark by 2022, competing in seven global events and clinching multiple medals, including gold and silver at the Para World Championships. At the Khelo India Para Games 2025, alongside his silver, he also reached the finals of the men’s 50m pistol SH1, finishing eighth—a testament to his growing prowess.

The Indian Army’s Marksmanship Unit has been instrumental in his rise, offering specialized training and unwavering support. “In the Army, whether you’re able or disabled, you’re treated with the same respect and given equal opportunities,” Bhat said. This ethos has fueled his transformation, turning obstacles into stepping stones.
Bhat’s journey is not just about medals; it’s about rewriting his destiny. His message to aspiring athletes facing adversity is clear and compelling: “Don’t be afraid. Step up and shoot. Shooting can become a way of life—a path to rediscovering yourself.” As he trains for future challenges, including his dream of a Paralympic medal, Amir Ahmad Bhat embodies resilience, hope, and the limitless potential of the human spirit, setting a new benchmark for what’s possible.
