-Punjab Launches Advanced Critical Care Training for Medical Officers to Enhance Golden-Hour Emergency Response

Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh announced a transformative initiative to train at least two Medical Officers (MOs) per district in advanced critical care at premier institutions, equipping them to handle ICU and trauma cases effectively. The announcement was made on Wednesday during the concluding day of a two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) program on National Health Programs and Medico-Legal Reports/Post-Mortem Reports (MLR/PMR) for Medical Officers in Chandigarh.

Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized that this ambitious training drive will strengthen emergency healthcare services by ensuring timely intervention during the “golden hour,” the critical period that significantly impacts patient survival rates. “Every second counts in saving lives. Punjab will set new benchmarks in golden-hour care, ensuring no patient is left behind,” he said, citing the success of the STEMI project, which has significantly reduced cardiac mortality through timely interventions.
The program saw participation from dedicated doctors across all 23 districts, reflecting Punjab’s commitment to accessible, equitable, and high-quality healthcare.

Strengthening the Healthcare System
Calling doctors the backbone of Punjab’s healthcare system, Dr. Singh stated, “Their dedication and expertise will shape a healthier and more resilient Punjab. We are building a system that prioritizes prevention, timely intervention, and compassionate care.” He highlighted the government’s focus on humane treatment for psychiatric patients, including those battling addiction, through integrated skill development and medical care programs to support recovery and societal reintegration. “Mental health is a priority. We will provide not just treatment but also opportunities for rehabilitation and empowerment,” he affirmed.

Recruitment and Training Initiatives
Dr. Singh announced the recruitment of 1,000 new Medical Officers, who will undergo specialized induction training before deployment to rural, border, and remote areas to bridge the urban-rural healthcare divide. Additionally:

Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) are being trained at IIM Ahmedabad in advanced critical care and emergency management.

Psychiatrists have completed specialized psychiatric care programs at AIIMS, Delhi, to integrate mental health services into primary care.
State Awards and Disease Surveillance
To recognize exceptional contributions, Dr. Singh introduced state awards for doctors excelling in medical service and public health programs. The government is also strengthening disease surveillance through State Working Groups and District Coordination Committees to ensure rapid responses to health threats.
Commitment to Universal Health Coverage
Reiterating the Punjab Government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Dr. Singh emphasized retaining medical specialists in public service and ensuring the availability of free essential drugs. He praised the medical fraternity as “the chosen architects of Punjab’s healthcare future,” reaffirming the government’s dedication to innovation, equity, and excellence in health services.
