Amritsar Police Bust Cross-Border Smuggling Networks, Arrest Three with 1.01kg Heroin

Major Crackdown on Drug Smuggling

As part of the ongoing anti-drug campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh,’ initiated by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police delivered a significant blow to cross-border smuggling networks on May 17, 2025. In two separate operations, police arrested three individuals, recovering 1.01 kg of heroin, ₹45.19 lakh in drug money, a cash counting machine, and a camera-fitted toy drone, according to Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav.

Details of the Arrests

The arrested individuals were identified as:

  • Rahul Singh alias Kalu (20) from Thathi Sohal, Tarn Taran
  • Gurmukh Singh (21) from Sudhar Rajputan, Amritsar
  • Varinderpal Singh (32) from Akalgarh Dhaphian, Amritsar

DGP Yadav stated that two First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered under the NDPS Act at Police Stations Gate Hakima and Verka. Investigations are ongoing to uncover forward and backward linkages to dismantle the entire smuggling network.

First Operation: Rahul Alias Kalu

Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar detailed the first operation, where CIA-2 teams arrested Rahul alias Kalu at his rented house in Anand Vihar, Amritsar. Police recovered 510 grams of heroin, ₹30.18 lakh in drug money, and a cash counting machine. Preliminary findings revealed that Rahul was in contact with a foreign-based smuggler, Tony German, and was distributing heroin locally after receiving consignments from across the border. An FIR (No. 117, dated May 16, 2025) was registered under sections 21-C and 25 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Gate Hakima.

Second Operation: Gurmukh Singh and Varinderpal Singh

In the second operation, Police Station Verka teams arrested Gurmukh Singh and Varinderpal Singh, recovering 500 grams of heroin, ₹15.19 lakh in drug money, and a camera-fitted toy drone used for practice. The accused had concealed the drug money in a secret locker within a bed-box at a house in Akalgarh. An FIR (No. 40, dated May 14, 2025) was registered under sections 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Verka.

Ongoing Investigations and Future Actions

CP Bhullar emphasized that further arrests and recoveries are expected in the coming days as investigations continue to trace the broader smuggling module. The Punjab Police remain committed to disrupting drug networks and curbing the drug menace in the state.
