Australia clinched a dramatic 184-run victory over India in the final hour of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match Border-Gavaskar series and significantly boosting their chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) Final.
The final Indian wicket fell with less than 14 overs remaining on the final day, as Nathan Lyon dismissed Mohammed Siraj, sending the ecstatic MCG crowd of over 74,000 into celebration.
This victory puts Australia in a commanding position to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by avoiding defeat in the final Test in Sydney. As the reigning WTC champions, they are now firmly on track for a second consecutive appearance in the WTC Final at Lord’s in 2025

WTC Standings Implications:
Australia retains its second-place position in the WTC standings. A win in any of their remaining three Tests this cycle (including the final Test against India and their subsequent series in Sri Lanka) will secure their place in the WTC Final alongside South Africa.
India’s path to the WTC Final is now more challenging. They must win the final Test in Sydney to draw the Border-Gavaskar series and then rely on Australia not winning a Test during their series in Sri Lanka.
Match Summary:
Australia’s victory was built on a strong all-around performance. Captain Pat Cummins (3/28) led the charge on the final day with a game-changing spell before lunch. Yashasvi Jaiswal (88) and Rishabh Pant (30) briefly reignited Indian hopes with a valuable 88-run partnership for the fourth wicket. However, Pant’s dismissal, caught off the bowling of Travis Head (1/14), shifted the momentum back to Australia. Jaiswal’s dismissal shortly after, following a controversial TV umpire decision, further solidified Australia’s advantage. Lyon (2/37), who bowled tirelessly throughout the day, eventually sealed the victory by taking the final wicket, bringing an end to a captivating Test match.
