In a significant move, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed New Zealand’s former cricket legend, Brendon McCullum, to a dual role. Effective January 2025, McCullum will not only continue as the head coach of England’s Test team but will also take the reins as the head coach of the white-ball side.
McCullum, who has been instrumental in England’s Test team’s resurgence since taking over in May 2022, has had his contract extended. This decision marks a U-turn for the ECB, which had previously opted for a split coaching model.

The appointment comes after the resignation of Matthew Mott as England’s white-ball coach in July.
Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, expressed his delight at McCullum’s decision to take on both roles. “We are incredibly fortunate to have a coach of Brendon’s quality fully committed to English cricket,” Key said.

McCullum, equally enthusiastic about his new role, stated, “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team and I’m now excited to work with the white-ball teams. It’s a new challenge that I’m ready to embrace.”
Key points of the announcement:
- Dual Role: McCullum will be both the Test and white-ball coach for England.
- Contract Extension: His contract has been extended until the end of 2027.
- U-Turn: The ECB has abandoned its previous split coaching model.
- Positive Impact: McCullum has already had a significant positive impact on England’s Test team.
- Focus on the Future: The ECB is optimistic about the future of English cricket under McCullum’s leadership.
This appointment is seen as a bold move by the ECB as they seek to build on the success of McCullum’s tenure and establish a consistent approach across all formats of the game.
