CM Mann Seeks Special Status and Central Aid for Punjab Amid Border Tensions

- Punjab, India’s Sword Arm, Deserves Special Recognition: CM Mann Urges Unity for Tax Haven Status
- Calls for Fiscal Relief and Border Duty Allowance Modeled on Jammu & Kashmir Package
Chandigarh, May 10:
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann passionately advocated for a special financial package and tax haven status for the state during an all-party meeting convened by Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, highlighting Punjab’s frontline role in facing cross-border conflicts.
Addressing the gathering, Mann emphasized that Punjab and its people have always been at the forefront during wars and emergencies, bearing the initial brunt of escalations. He urged all political parties to unite in seeking special treatment for the state’s significant contributions to national security and food security. Mann announced that the state government will formally raise this demand with the Government of India, calling for concerted efforts to position Punjab as a leading state.

Mann underscored Punjab’s dual role as the nation’s food bowl and sword arm, lamenting that its sacrifices have often been overlooked. He stressed the urgency for political parties to set aside differences and collectively demand a special package to boost Punjab’s development and prosperity. The Chief Minister welcomed party leaders for their prompt response during this critical time and called for a united front to safeguard the state’s interests.
The proposed package, Mann suggested, should mirror the one granted to Jammu & Kashmir, including fiscal relief and a Border Area Allowance for doctors, teachers, anganwadi workers, and others serving in border districts. He described this as essential for accelerating the state’s progress and supporting its workforce in high-risk areas.
Mann also announced that, starting Sunday, he will personally visit Punjab’s border regions to assess the ground situation. Acknowledging the severe impact of recent tensions on these areas, he assured that those who suffered losses due to bombardments and other incidents will be adequately compensated by the state government.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed Punjab’s preparedness as a border state to handle any unforeseen challenges. He highlighted the Punjab Police’s role as a second line of defense in protecting the nation’s unity, integrity, and sovereignty. Mann added that the state is equipping the police with modern technology to enhance their ability to manage any crisis effectively.
