New Zealand Crushes India in Dubai Demolition

UAE/Patiala, 05 October (Sports Desk)

A powerful opening partnership and Sophie Devine’s outstanding 57* propelled New Zealand to a tournament-high total, leaving India needing 161 to win. India’s chase was derailed by consistent wickets, ultimately falling 58 runs short of their target.

India’s Batting Collapse

Despite a promising start, India’s top order struggled, with five of the top six reaching double figures but none passing 15. Eden Carson’s early wickets and Harmanpreet Kaur’s dismissal in the powerplay set the tone for India’s struggles.

Jemimah Rodrigues’s promising knock was cut short, and the middle order failed to deliver the necessary runs. With the required run rate increasing, India’s task became insurmountable, and wickets continued to fall.

New Zealand’s Bowling Dominance

Richa Ghosh, Deepti Sharma, Arundhati Reddy, Pooja Vastrakar, Shreyanka Patil, and Renuka Singh were the remaining wickets to fall. Rosemary Mair’s 4/19, Lea Tahuhu’s 3/15, Eden Carson’s 2/34, and Melie Kerr’s 1/19 combined to dismantle India’s batting.

New Zealand’s Strong Start

Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first. The openers, Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer, put on a solid partnership, scoring 55 runs in the first six overs.

Despite Bates’ dismissal, the Kiwis continued to score runs. Captain Sophie Devine’s brilliant half-century and contributions from Melie Kerr, Brooke Halliday, and Maddy Green propelled New Zealand to a total of 160/4, which proved to be more than enough.

Tournament Implications

Both India and New Zealand are aiming to win their first Women’s T20 World Cup. This defeat puts India in a difficult position in Group A, while New Zealand’s strong performance positions them well for the tournament.
