In an impressive display of bowling, Ajaz Patel (six wickets) and Glenn Phillips (three wickets) led New Zealand to a 25-run victory over India on the third day of the third Test on Sunday. With this win, New Zealand clinched the three-match series 3-0.
India appeared on track for a win after lunch, but in the 22nd over, Ajaz Patel dismissed Rishabh Pant (64), bringing New Zealand back into the game. Pant’s innings included nine fours and one six. Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar attempted to stabilize the innings, but Phillips quickly dismissed Ashwin (8) and Akash Deep (0) in the same over, crushing India’s hopes. Ajaz ended India’s innings at 121 in the 30th over by bowling Sundar (12), securing the 25-run win and a historic series sweep. This marked the first time India lost a Test series at home.
This defeat will impact India’s position in the World Test Championship standings. After restricting New Zealand to 174 in their second innings, India’s batting faltered early, with wickets falling rapidly at a score of just 29. Captain Rohit Sharma (11), Shubman Gill (1), Yashasvi Jaiswal (5), and Virat Kohli (1) all fell cheaply. Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant then added a 42-run partnership.
