-Gatka Officiating Undergoes Major Overhaul as Three-Day National Refresher Course Concludes

The three-day National Gatka Refresher Course, organised by the National Gatka Association of India (NGAI), concluded successfully with a written examination, marking a significant milestone in professionalising officiating in this traditional Sikh martial art. The exam will serve as the foundation for grading and certifying Gatka officials, determining their eligibility to referee at national-level competitions.
Speaking at the valedictory session, NGAI President Advocate Harjeet Singh Grewal emphasised that the certification process aims to ensure consistent rule application, enhance technical expertise, and promote discipline and impartiality in tournaments. “From now on, only certified referees and judges—who have undergone rigorous theoretical and practical assessments—will be authorised to officiate at national championships and major events,” he stated.
Grewal described the course and examination as key elements of a broader strategy to align Gatka officiating with international standards. He announced that the next refresher course will be held in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, in January, in collaboration with the New Gatka Sports Association Chhattisgarh. Similar programmes are planned across the country to build a larger cadre of qualified officials.
In a major update, Grewal revealed that the amended fifth edition of the World Gatka Federation (WGF) International Rules Book will be published soon. Incorporating recent reforms and insights from domestic and global competitions, this edition will become the definitive guide for players, officials, and organisers.
Participants from various states praised the programme for its enriching mix of theory and practice. Aman Singh (Chhattisgarh), Pandurang Ambhure (Maharashtra), Gurwinder Singh Ghanouli (Punjab), and Harnam Singh (Haryana) noted that the sessions greatly improved their knowledge of officiating protocols, tournament management, and on-field decision-making.
Sukhchain Singh Kalsani, Vice Chairman of the International Sikh Martial Art Council, commended NGAI’s efforts, stating that the initiative signals a shift towards structured governance, accountability, and professionalism in Gatka, paving the way for more disciplined and internationally competitive events.
NGAI General Secretary Harjinder Kumar and Joint Secretary of the Gatka Association of Punjab, Baljit Singh, stressed the importance of ongoing training to support Gatka’s expanding presence nationally and globally.
