Punjab CM Vows to Fiercely Oppose Centre’s ‘Unfair Delimitation’ at Chennai Conference

Chennai, March 22

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has declared a strong opposition to the “unfair and undemocratic” delimitation process initiated by the BJP-led Union government, accusing it of attempting to suppress opposition voices. Speaking at a conference hosted by Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, Mann labeled the move as a “shameful act” designed to reduce parliamentary seats in states where the BJP struggles to win, while increasing them in its strongholds.

A Threat to Democracy

Mann criticized the delimitation as a calculated effort to weaken opposition parties by slashing seats in regions like South India, where the BJP has less influence, while boosting seats in the Hindi belt, particularly in states like Uttar Pradesh. He pointed out the irony of punishing southern states for their successful population control measures, noting that the BJP might increase Uttar Pradesh’s Lok Sabha seats from 80 to over 140, while reducing representation elsewhere.

Manipulating Representation

Using his former Lok Sabha constituency of Sangrur as an example, Mann explained how the BJP could split a single seat covering Sangrur, Barnala, and Malerkotla into three separate constituencies to create more winnable seats in its strongholds. He warned that the BJP aims to expand the total Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850 or more, consolidating its dominance at the expense of fair representation.

Punjab’s Diminishing Voice

Mann highlighted the potential impact on Punjab, a state that contributed 90% of the sacrifices during India’s freedom struggle. Currently, Punjab holds 13 Lok Sabha seats, representing 2.39% of the total. Under the proposed delimitation, while the state’s seats might increase to 18, its share would drop to 2.11%. Mann called this reduction unacceptable, advocating for an increase to 21 seats to maintain or enhance Punjab’s representation.

A United Front Against Delimitation

Describing the delimitation as “intolerable, unwarranted, and undesirable,” Mann pledged to fight it “tooth and nail.” He accused the BJP of attempting to “humiliate Punjab” and weaken democracy, vowing that such moves would not be tolerated. Mann extended full support to like-minded parties opposing this “draconian and anti-democratic” policy and invited them to hold the next conference in Punjab to strategize further resistance.

This conference marks a significant step in rallying opposition against the Centre’s delimitation plans, with Mann positioning Punjab as a key player in the fight for democratic fairness.
