CHANDIGARH, February 9
In a bold move to tackle Punjab’s drug menace by reviving the state’s proud sporting heritage, the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab Government on Monday approved the launch of the Punjab Cricket League (PCL). The initiative positions sports as a serious, strategic tool for youth empowerment rather than just a superficial outreach effort.
Modeled on the Indian Premier League (IPL), the league will feature teams representing districts and geographical regions. It will be organized in collaboration with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). The primary goal is to systematically scout, nurture, and guide young cricketing talent into professional careers, while simultaneously creating a broader ecosystem of district- and state-level leagues in multiple sports. This multi-sport approach aims to decisively pull Punjab’s youth away from drugs and towards discipline, opportunity, and the chance to represent the nation.
Sharing highlights from the meeting, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann posted: “Today in Chandigarh, I held a meeting with senior officials from the Department of Sports and Youth Services to discuss various issues, with special focus on promoting sports culture across the state. All officials have been directed to contribute their maximum efforts to encourage youth to take up sports, with the aim of building a healthy and fit society. The government is continuously working to restore Punjab’s sports culture and reconnect our youth with playgrounds across the state.”
While chairing a review meeting of the Sports Department, CM Mann announced that the state government will collaborate with the Punjab Cricket Association and the BCCI to organize the Punjab Cricket League, specifically to groom talent from every corner of Punjab. “The state government will work with the Punjab Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India to organize the Punjab Cricket League for grooming the youth of the state,” he said.
Citing global success stories, the Chief Minister noted that similar initiatives have transformed world cricket. “Players like Imran Khan and Arjuna Ranatunga produced many renowned cricketers for the world through such programs. This league will go a long way in establishing Punjab as a nursery of cricketing talent,” he added.
Explaining the league’s structure, CM Mann said it will follow the IPL format, with teams formed on the basis of districts and major regions. “The Punjab Cricket League will be organized on the lines of the Indian Premier League, and teams will be constituted based on districts and geographical regions such as Majha, Doaba, and Malwa to compete in the tournament,” he explained.
He emphasized that the league will create a strong talent pipeline for national and international cricket. “This league will help produce a talented pool of cricketers ready for national and international-level tournaments,” the Chief Minister said.
At the same time, he stressed the importance of promoting other sports across Punjab. “District-level and state-level leagues should also be organized for games like Volleyball, Football, Hockey, Basketball, Kho-Kho, and Kabaddi,” he said. He added that the government is launching an aggressive campaign to train the maximum number of sportspersons. “Our aim is to ensure that more Punjabi players represent India in international sporting events,” he affirmed.

He concluded by saying that sports offer a powerful path for youth to excel and bring pride to the state. “Games give our youth the opportunity to shine in sports and bring pride to Punjab,” Mann said, reiterating the government’s resolve. “The state government is committed to reviving Punjab’s glory in sports, and no stone will be left unturned to achieve this goal,” he added.
