Punjab Jails Minister S. Laljit Singh Bhullar distributed appointment letters to 15 newly recruited JBT (Junior Basic Training) teachers, marking a historic milestone as the first-ever regular recruitment for these positions within the department.
During the ceremony held at Punjab Bhawan, Minister Bhullar emphasized the crucial role these teachers will play in educating prisoners and their children, aiding in the prisoners’ reintegration into society.
“Previously, these teaching positions were filled through temporary arrangements,” the Minister stated, highlighting that the Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government has conducted the first regular recruitment for these roles in three decades. He further added that newly appointed teachers have been prioritized for postings near their home districts to facilitate their duties.
Providing an update on ongoing recruitment efforts within the department, Minister Bhullar confirmed that 738 warders and 25 matrons have already joined their posts following a recent recruitment drive. Additionally, the recruitment process for 179 guarding staff positions, including 175 warders and 4 matrons, is currently underway.
Reinforcing the Mann government’s commitment to strengthening the prison system, the Minister announced the revival of 1220 posts across various cadres, with the recruitment process scheduled to begin soon.
Regarding educational initiatives within prisons, Minister Bhullar stated that approximately 2200 prisoners are currently enrolled in various educational courses under the department’s Sikhya Daat Project. Furthermore, 513 prisoners will participate in skill development training in January 2025, covering trades such as electrician, plumber, and tailoring, facilitated by the Punjab Skill Development Mission.
