OFFERING REHABILITATION OPPORTUNITIES TO LIFE-SENTENCE INMATES WITH GOOD CONDUCT: LALJIT BHULLAR

In a compassionate move, the Punjab Government has granted early release to 108 life-sentence prisoners who displayed exemplary conduct during their incarceration over the past year. Punjab’s Minister of Jails, Laljit Bhullar, stated that this initiative aims to provide rehabilitation opportunities to inmates demonstrating good behavior.
The Cabinet Minister elaborated, “Over the past year, 108 prisoners serving life sentences in various Punjab jails have been released.” He emphasized that this decision reflects the state government’s commitment to offering a second chance to individuals who have shown good conduct and met the criteria for early release.
S. Bhullar highlighted that this initiative supports the rehabilitation and reintegration of these individuals into mainstream society. “This step is part of the Punjab Government’s broader strategy to ensure the justice system not only punishes but also fosters rehabilitation and societal reintegration,” he said.
By releasing prisoners who demonstrate a commitment to reform, the government seeks to promote a more humane and effective approach to justice. “The release of these prisoners underscores our commitment to rehabilitation and providing opportunities for individuals to reconnect with society,” Bhullar remarked. “We believe in second chances and are dedicated to building a more compassionate and just society.”

Additionally, the Cabinet Minister noted that approximately 800 calling systems have been installed in jails to enable communication between prisoners and their families or lawyers, reducing the reliance on illegal mobile phones. Indigent prisoners are provided free calling services, allowing 10 minutes of calls every 15 days to stay in touch with their families and legal counsel.
