Chandigarh, January 12:
Punjab Finance, Excise, and Taxation Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema announced the seizure of a truck carrying 220 cases of liquor labeled “For Sale in Chandigarh Only” by a special operations group consisting of the Mohali Excise team and Mohali Police near Handesra. This operation is part of a state-wide campaign aimed at curbing the smuggling of liquor from Chandigarh into Punjab.
Providing details, Minister Cheema stated that this is the sixth significant instance of liquor smuggling from Chandigarh being intercepted in recent weeks. He noted that FIR No. 01 dated 11.01.2025 has been filed under Sections 61(1)(14) and 78(2) of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914, at Police Station Handesra. Additionally, six other FIRs have been registered in Mohali district, leading to the seizure of 42 more cases of liquor.

The minister revealed that as of December 31, 2024, a total of 114 FIRs related to Chandigarh liquor smuggling have been registered during the current financial year, resulting in the recovery of 30,096 bottles. He emphasized the state’s zero-tolerance approach towards liquor smuggling, stating, “The ongoing campaign will be further intensified in collaboration with Punjab Police, and strict legal action will be taken against all involved.”
Minister Cheema stressed the economic and legal implications of liquor smuggling, noting that it is a serious offence under the Punjab Excise Act, 1914, that directly affects the state’s revenue. “Those involved in such illegal activities will face severe consequences as per the law. The government is committed to ensuring accountability and preventing revenue loss,” he said.
The Finance Minister appealed to the people of Punjab to assist in curbing liquor smuggling by reporting suspicious activities to the authorities. “Together, we can eliminate this menace and safeguard the state’s resources,” he concluded.
