Defending champion Neeraj Chopra from India qualified for the final of the men’s javelin throw event at the Paris Olympic Games on Tuesday, with a remarkable throw of 89.34 meters in his very first attempt in Group B qualification.
As the first athlete to throw in Group B, Neeraj set a new season’s best with his 89.34-meter throw, securing his place in the final scheduled for August 8th. German athlete Julian Weber, despite three attempts, couldn’t surpass this distance and managed only 85.64 meters. No other athlete in both qualification rounds has thrown as far as Neeraj.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem secured the third spot with a second-attempt throw of 85.16 meters.
Neeraj, the reigning Olympic and World Champion, had won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics with a throw of 87.58 meters. Now, he aims to become the fifth male javelin thrower in Olympic history to successfully defend his title. If he wins the gold, he will also become the first Indian to win two gold medals in an individual Olympic event.
In the history of the Olympic men’s javelin throw, only Erik Lemming (Sweden, 1908 and 1912), Jonni Myyrä (Finland, 1920 and 1924), Chopra’s idol Jan Železný (Czech Republic, 1992 and 1996), and Andreas Thorkildsen (Norway, 2004 and 2008) have successfully defended their Olympic titles.
