Vinesh Phogat, the renowned Indian female wrestler, has announced her retirement from wrestling following her disqualification from the Olympic gold medal match. The news was shared by Phogat herself in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter).
The wrestler, who had been a strong contender for the gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024, was disqualified on August 7th, just before her gold medal match. She was found to be 100 grams over the weight limit, a rule violation that resulted in her disqualification. This unexpected turn of events led to widespread disappointment among her fans and the sporting community.
In her emotional post, Phogat wrote, “Mother wrestling has won, I have lost. Forgive me. Your dream, my courage, everything is broken. I don’t have any strength left now. Goodbye wrestling, 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all. Sorry.”

Phogat’s disqualification was a major setback, especially considering her impressive performance throughout the tournament. Despite her best efforts to shed the excess weight, including rigorous exercise the night before the match, she was unable to meet the weight requirement.
The wrestler has since appealed her disqualification to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking a joint silver medal. The CAS is an international organization that resolves disputes related to sports. A decision on her appeal is expected soon.
