Unveiling the Arsenal: A Guide to Dismissals in Cricket

Patiala, 07 January (Sports Desk)

The art of dismissing a batter is a bowler’s ultimate weapon in cricket. While batters strive to pile on runs, bowlers strategize to send them packing back to the pavilion. This guide dissects the 10 ways a batter can be dismissed in cricket.

The Fundamentals:

  • Out ≠ Wicket: A dismissal doesn’t always involve the wicket being broken. Some dismissals, like run out, occur even with the stumps intact.
  • Legality Matters: For most dismissals, the bowler’s delivery must be legal. An illegal delivery, like a no-ball, cannot result in a dismissal (except for a rare “caught off a no-ball”).

The Dismissal Dictionary:

  1. Bowled: The classic dismissal! The bowler’s delivery hits the batter’s stumps, dislodging the bails.
  2. Caught: The batter hits the ball, and a fielder pouches it before it touches the ground.
  3. Hit Wicket: The batter accidentally dislodges their own stumps with their body or bat while playing a shot or taking a stance.
  4. Leg Before Wicket (LBW): A tricky one! The ball hits any part of the batter’s body (except the gloves) without first touching the bat, and the umpire believes it would have hit the stumps.
  5. Run Out: The batter is outside the crease (the batting area) when the fielder breaks the wicket with the ball in play.
  6. Stumped: While the batter is out of their crease, the wicketkeeper removes the bails with the ball in hand.
  7. Hit the Ball Twice: This is rare! The batter hits the ball twice – first legally and then intentionally with any part of their body (except the hand holding the bat).
  8. Obstructing the Field: The batter deliberately hinders the fielding side by words or actions.
  9. Retired Out: The batter leaves the field without the umpire’s permission for reasons other than illness or injury.
  10. Timed Out: A new batter can be dismissed if they take more than three minutes to be ready to face the next ball.

Mastering the Game:

Understanding these dismissals is crucial for both bowlers, who strategize to achieve them, and batters, who aim to avoid them. This knowledge adds depth to the game and keeps the competition exciting!
