A sewage treatment plant, established at a cost of ₹145.26 crore in Mohali, has been dedicated to the public.
SAS Nagar (Mohali), July 7
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated a state-of-the-art 15 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) worth ₹145.26 crore in Sector-83, Mohali, on Monday, marking a significant step toward environmental sustainability and urban development. The leaders announced plans to replicate this advanced technology across Punjab and unveiled a mission-mode initiative to transform 166 towns with enhanced water supply, sewerage, cleanliness, roads, lighting, and STPs starting December 2025.
A Milestone in Environmental Conservation
Addressing the media post-inauguration, CM Mann emphasized the plant’s cutting-edge technology, which will be adopted statewide to optimize wastewater utilization and conserve Punjab’s water resources. Citing Singapore’s micro-filter technology for potable rainwater, he highlighted the state’s commitment to preserving water, air, and land—resources neglected by previous governments due to their lack of “voting power.” “Massive pollution and degradation occurred under past regimes, but our government is taking exemplary steps to save the environment and rejuvenate canal systems,” Mann said.
Quoting the Gurbani verse ‘Pawan Guru, Paani Pitaah, Mata Dharat Mahat’ (air as teacher, water as father, land as mother), Mann urged citizens to embrace these teachings by planting trees and supporting the government’s efforts to restore Punjab’s ecological glory. He credited AAP’s vision, inspired by Kejriwal’s governance model in Delhi, for driving such initiatives and congratulated officials for the project’s seamless execution.

Advanced Technology and Features
The Mohali STP, upgraded from 10 MGD to 15 MGD, utilizes Advanced Nutrient Removal Technology to treat wastewater efficiently. Key features include:
-
A 5 MGD Ultra Filtration Tertiary Treatment Plant, Punjab’s first, producing treated water for irrigation, road cleaning, toilet flushing, and municipal uses, reducing reliance on freshwater and conserving groundwater.
-
A 1 MW solar power plant to minimize electricity consumption, enhancing sustainability.
-
A scientific design by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), accounting for Mohali’s projected population growth and urban development over the next 20 years.
CM Mann announced that this technology will be replicated across Punjab to ensure sustainable water management for future generations, emphasizing that “prevention is better than cure.”
Arvind Kejriwal’s Vision for Punjab
Kejriwal lauded CM Mann for this pathbreaking initiative, describing the STP as a landmark project for Punjab’s progress. He announced a comprehensive roadmap to transform 166 towns starting December 2025, ensuring water supply, sewerage, cleanliness, roads, lighting, and STPs. “This is not just about infrastructure; it’s about building a sustainable future for Punjab,” Kejriwal said.
He highlighted the plant’s role in reducing freshwater dependency and praised Mann’s leadership for aligning Punjab with AAP’s people-centric governance model, proven successful in Delhi. Kejriwal assured continued efforts to prioritize public welfare, leaving no stone unturned.

Critique of Past Governments
Both leaders criticized previous administrations for ignoring environmental concerns, leading to widespread pollution and resource degradation. Mann noted that traditional leaders overlooked water, air, and land due to their lack of electoral value, causing irreparable societal loss. In contrast, the AAP government has prioritized environmental rejuvenation, with initiatives like canal restoration and advanced wastewater treatment.
Call to Action
Mann urged Punjabis to support the government’s green initiatives by planting trees and adopting sustainable practices. He emphasized that collective action, inspired by Gurbani’s reverence for nature, is crucial for restoring Punjab’s environmental heritage. Kejriwal echoed this, calling the STP a model for future projects and a testament to AAP’s commitment to progressive governance.
Significance
The Mohali STP, India’s most advanced, sets a benchmark for sustainable urban development. By integrating cutting-edge technology and renewable energy, it addresses water scarcity and environmental challenges while paving the way for similar projects across Punjab. The initiative reflects AAP’s broader vision of transforming Punjab into a model state through innovation, governance, and public participation.
