The Controversy Behind Modi’s Flood Relief: Arora Speaks Out
-Modi Has Turned Away from Punjab’s Pain: Arora
Chandigarh, September 9
Punjab Cabinet Minister and Aam Aadmi Party state president, Aman Arora, expressed profound disappointment over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of a ₹1600 crore relief package for Punjab, which has suffered losses exceeding ₹20,000 crore due to devastating floods. Terming the package a “cruel joke” on flood-hit Punjab, Arora criticized the Prime Minister’s visit to assess the flood situation as yielding nothing substantial for the state’s recovery.
In a sharp attack on the central government, Arora stated that instead of providing meaningful relief as expected, the Prime Minister has mocked Punjab with this inadequate package. He described the ₹1600 crore aid as an insult to the people of Punjab, particularly when farmers’ livelihoods are at stake, with their homes, crops, and livestock swept away by the floods. Arora called the central government’s response not only deplorable and insufficient but also a grave disrespect to Punjab, labeling the package a “slap on the face” of every citizen who has lost everything in the disaster.
Arora highlighted that the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has been consistently demanding the immediate release of ₹60,000 crore in withheld central funds and an additional ₹20,000 crore for flood relief. He criticized Modi’s meager aid as a mockery of Punjab’s plight, reflecting the central government’s clear neglect of the state’s suffering.
He further elaborated, “Punjab’s lifeline, its agriculture, has been severely devastated. The crops that our farmers nurtured like their own children were destroyed just 15-20 days before harvest. They have no chance to replant. Our farmers have lost their entire season’s income.” Arora noted that a total of 4.80 lakh acres of agricultural land has been affected, with paddy crops suffering the most, accounting for over 3.71 lakh acres of damage.

Arora pointed out that the floods, the worst since 1988, have claimed 52 precious lives and directly impacted nearly 4 lakh people across more than 2,000 villages. He emphasized the urgent need for extensive rehabilitation efforts given the scale of destruction.
Demanding immediate action, Arora urged the central government to responsibly assess the damages and announce a comprehensive relief package, considering the severity of the disaster and Punjab’s invaluable contributions to the nation. Highlighting the stark contrast between Punjab’s historic contributions and the central government’s dismissive attitude, he said, “From the freedom struggle to filling the nation’s granaries, Punjab has always been India’s sword and shield. Our farmers have ensured India’s food security for decades, and our soldiers have bravely defended its borders. Yet, when our land is drowning in floods and our people are facing immense hardships, the Government of India chooses to turn a blind eye to our demands.”
