Teachers and parents must be good readers themselves: Jaswant Singh Zafar
Patiala, December 4
Renowned writer, actor and theatre personality Rana Ranbir was the special guest at the monthly ‘Pustak Baithak’ organised by the Department of Languages, Punjab, under the leadership of Director Jaswant Singh Zafar. The topic of discussion was “The Importance of Books in Life”.
Addressing the gathering, Director Zafar welcomed Rana Ranbir and said that he is an artist in whose every creation the deep influence of books is clearly visible. He always tries to convey a meaningful message to society through his art. Zafar emphasised that children of parents who themselves read books automatically understand the value of reading. Similarly, students of teachers who are avid readers achieve success in every sphere of life. Therefore, it is extremely important for both parents and teachers to be good readers themselves.

Speaking on the occasion, Rana Ranbir said, “A book bestows character, strength and a sense of equality upon a human being.” This belief perfectly reflects his own life journey. He started writing only after reading books extensively, which opened doors to acting, screenplay writing and many other avenues. Books, he added, stand by a person through every joy and sorrow, show new dreams, and introduce one to worlds that bring peace, wisdom and the courage to move towards new destinations. A book is a person’s truest friend and brings refinement to one’s personality. Artists who read books understand society more deeply, and consequently their art speaks directly to common people and resonates with them.
Research Officer Dr. Sukhdarshan Singh Chahal moderated an interactive session with Rana Ranbir. On this occasion, Research Officer Dr. Santokh Sukhi and Senior Assistant Saroop Singh recited poems dedicated to Rana Ranbir. Research Officer Dr. Manjinder Singh, Research Assistants Maheshinder Khosla and Ankush Kumar shared their personal experiences related to reading.
Among those present were literature lover Ajaib Singh Chatha (from Canada), poet Avatarjeet, Assistant Director Sukhpreet Kaur, Surinder Kaur, Davinder Kaur and a large number of literature enthusiasts. At the end of the programme, the Department of Languages honoured Rana Ranbir.
