Bindu Sarovar is one of India’s most significant pilgrimage sites, particularly associated with the salvation of mothers. This lake is situated in the historic city of Sidhpur, Gujarat.
Significance and Origin of the Lake
- The Tapasya of Rishi Kardam: According to Hindu scriptures, Bindu Sarovar originated as a result of the intense penance performed by Rishi Kardam for ten thousand years. Rishi Kardam is believed to have emerged from the shadow of Lord Brahma.
- Mentions in Ancient Texts: The Rig Veda, Ramayana, and Mahabharata—ancient Indian scriptures—make references to Bindu Sarovar, indicating its antiquity and importance.
- The Abode of Maternal Salvation: Most importantly, Bindu Sarovar is considered the abode of maternal salvation. Sons perform special rituals here for the salvation of their mothers.

The Story of Kapil Muni and Devhuti Kapil Muni, believed to be an avatar of Lord Vishnu, was the son of Rishi Kardam and Devhuti. When Rishi Kardam was engrossed in deep meditation, Devhuti became very sad. Kapil Muni taught his mother the Sankhya philosophy and encouraged her to meditate on Lord Vishnu. Later, Devhuti passed away. Kapil Muni performed special rituals on the banks of this very lake for his mother’s salvation, and since then, this place has been renowned for maternal salvation.

Significance of the Month of Kartik According to the Hindu calendar, a grand fair is organized at Bindu Sarovar every year in the month of Kartik. During this time, a large number of devotees come here to perform rituals for the salvation of their mothers.
Other Sacred Lakes Apart from Bindu Sarovar, India has many other sacred lakes, such as Kailash Mansarovar, Narayan Sarovar, Pushkar Sarovar, and Pampa Sarovar. These lakes also hold special significance in Hinduism.
Bindu Sarovar is not just a lake; it is a center of faith and devotion. This lake symbolizes the sacred bond between a mother and son and keeps the beliefs and traditions of Hinduism alive. It is believed that Lord Parashuram also performed the shraddha (rituals for the departed) of his mother on the banks of Bindu Sarovar in Sidhpur. The lake has stone ghats and Lord Parashuram’s ashram is nearby. The Moksha Peepal tree, where sons pray for the salvation of their mothers, is also located nearby.
