CHANDIGARH, March 16:

On the 16th consecutive day of the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” (War Against Drugs) campaign launched by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to combat the drug menace in Punjab, the state police conducted raids at 424 locations on Sunday. The operation led to the arrest of 63 drug smugglers and the registration of 45 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. With this latest crackdown, the total number of drug smugglers arrested has now reached 2,012 in just 16 days.

The raids resulted in significant recoveries, including 385 grams of heroin, 19 kilograms of poppy husk, 2,673 intoxicant tablets/pills/injections, and ₹15,600 in drug money from the possession of those apprehended.

The operation was carried out under the directives of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, and spanned all 28 police districts simultaneously.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has tasked Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents of Police with making Punjab a drug-free state within three months. To oversee progress, the Punjab government has formed a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to monitor the anti-drug campaign.

Providing further details, Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla stated that over 200 police teams, comprising more than 1,400 personnel, conducted the raids under the supervision of 98 gazetted officers. During the day-long operation, the teams scrutinized 593 suspicious individuals across the state.

Shukla emphasized the state government’s three-pronged strategy — Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP) — aimed at eradicating the drug menace. As part of the ‘De-addiction’ initiative, Punjab Police successfully convinced three individuals to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment.

In a significant development, Punjab Police also conducted special search operations at jails in six districts — Commissionerate Amritsar, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Batala, Amritsar Rural, and Tarn Taran — to curb any illegal activities within the prison premises. “Our police teams thoroughly searched every nook and corner, including barracks, kitchens, and toilets, in the jail complexes,” said Special DGP Arpit Shukla.

This multi-faceted approach highlights Punjab Police’s unwavering commitment to not only cracking down on drug smuggling but also addressing addiction and preventing future drug-related crimes.
