“Democracy Under Threat”: CM Bhagwant Mann Demands Disqualification of Defector Rajya Sabha MPs from President

NEW DELHI / PUNJAB, May 5
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met the President of India and demanded immediate cancellation of the membership of Rajya Sabha MPs whom he termed as “Punjab de Gaddar” (traitors of Punjab) after their defection to the BJP.

The Chief Minister arrived in Delhi along with all AAP MLAs from Punjab and submitted a memorandum signed by party legislators at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He alleged that the BJP’s increasing Rajya Sabha strength in Punjab despite having only two MLAs in the state was a “mockery of democracy.”

Calling the seven MPs “selected, not elected,” Mann said their switch to another party was not patriotism but a betrayal of Punjab’s mandate. He challenged the MPs to resign and seek a fresh public mandate through elections if they truly believed in democratic values.

Sharing details of the meeting on social media, the Chief Minister accused the BJP of misusing agencies like the ED and CBI to pressure opposition leaders and engineer defections through what he described as “Operation Lotus.” He asserted that such tactics would never succeed in Punjab because Punjabis do not tolerate betrayal.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Mann stated that constitutional provisions should be strengthened to allow recall of defecting MPs, saying leaders who betray public trust must be held accountable.

The Chief Minister also warned that joining the BJP would not provide immunity from legal action in Punjab. He said the state government would continue to act against anyone found guilty of wrongdoing, irrespective of political affiliation.

Targeting the BJP further, Mann accused the party of repeatedly discriminating against Punjab on several issues, including Panjab University, Chandigarh, Bhakra Dam, and central grants. He claimed the BJP was attempting to weaken Punjab through political pressure and intimidation.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment to Punjab, the Chief Minister said AAP derives its strength from ordinary people and remains dedicated to protecting the state’s rights, democracy, and constitutional values.
