Dr. Rajwant Kaur Punjabi Takes Charge as Head of Punjabi Department at Punjabi University

Appointment and Background
Dr. Rajwant Kaur Punjabi has officially taken over as the Head of the Punjabi Department at Punjabi University, Patiala. A distinguished State Awardee, Dr. Punjabi holds advanced academic degrees, including an M.A. in Punjabi and Religious Studies, as well as a Ph.D. She is also trained in Urdu and Persian languages. Prior to this role, she served as a lecturer at the university’s Center for Advanced Technical Development of Punjabi Language, Literature, and Culture. She joined the Punjabi Department as an Assistant Professor in 2011.
Vision for the Department
Upon assuming her new role, Dr. Punjabi expressed gratitude to Waheguru and extended special thanks to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Jagdeep Singh. She described the opportunity to lead the department—previously helmed by eminent and established scholars—as a matter of great pride. Dr. Punjabi outlined her priorities, emphasizing collaborative efforts with the department’s staff to elevate the Punjabi Department through impactful research, innovative teaching and learning methods, and organizing high-quality conferences and seminars.

The event marking her appointment saw the presence of several notable figures, including Dr. Jaswinder Singh Brar (Director, Planning and Monitoring), Dr. Balwinder Kaur Sidhu (Dean, Languages), Dr. Pushpinder Kaur, Dr. Regina Maini (Chief Medical Officer), and former Head Dr. Gurmukh Singh. A large number of department heads, faculty members, researchers, and students from various departments also attended.
Academic Contributions
Dr. Rajwant Kaur Punjabi is a prolific scholar with 21 published books, spanning original works, research, editing, transliteration, translation, and children’s literature. Her book Sehra te Sikhya Sankalan ate Mulankan received the Best Book Award from the Punjab Language Department in 2010. Currently, she is working on projects assigned by prestigious institutions such as the Sahitya Akademi, Delhi, and the Punjab Language Department. Dr. Punjabi has also supervised 28 M.Phil. and Ph.D. research projects.
