Punjab’s Alka Periwal Wins Gold Medal at World Yogasana Championship 2026
Ahmedabad, June 6, 2026: Punjab’s Alka Periwal has brought glory to both Punjab and India by winning a gold medal at the inaugural World Yogasana Championship 2026, being held at EKA Arena, Ahmedabad, from June 4 to 8.
The historic championship was inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The opening ceremony was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, and World Yogasana President Swami Ramdev.
The achievement has also been appreciated by Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University, Patiala, which has an official collaboration with World Yogasana. The university congratulated Alka Periwal on her remarkable success and contribution to promoting Yogasana on the global stage.

Yogasana Bharat President Udit Sheth and General Secretary Dr. Jaideep Arya played a significant role in making this landmark event a reality. Their vision and dedication have been instrumental in establishing Yogasana as a globally recognized competitive sport.
More than 500 athletes from 78 countries are participating in the first-ever World Yogasana Championship. Host nation India has made an impressive start, securing 22 gold medals by the third day of the competition.
Punjab Yogasana Association President Dr. Akal Kala Sekhwan described the championship as a major milestone for the sport. He expressed confidence that Yogasana would be included in the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympic Games, given its growing international recognition.
A unique feature of the championship is the inclusion of six age categories. Additionally, for the first time at the global level, an electronic scoring system is being used to ensure greater transparency and accuracy in judging.
Alka Periwal’s gold medal victory stands as a proud moment for Punjab and India, highlighting the country’s growing dominance in the emerging global sport of Yogasana.
