Førde, Norway, October 2 (Sports Desk)
A 14-member Indian weightlifting team, comprising seven men and seven women, will compete at the World Weightlifting Championships 2025, held in Førde, Norway, from October 2 to 11. Spearheading the contingent is Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu, who aims to add to her illustrious record in the global event.
Indian Contingent and Key Athletes
Mirabai Chanu (48kg) leads India’s hopes following her gold medal win in the 48kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in August 2025, marking her return after the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 31-year-old previously clinched gold in the 48kg category at the 2017 World Championships in Anaheim and a silver in the 49kg category in Bogotá in 2022.
The women’s team includes Koyel Bar (53kg), Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam (58kg), Nirupama Devi Seram (63kg), Harjinder Kaur (69kg), Vanshita Verma (86kg), and Mehak Sharma (86kg+). Bindyarani Devi, Nirupama Devi, and Mehak Sharma secured silver medals, while Harjinder Kaur and Vanshita Verma won bronze at the Commonwealth Championships in August. Bindyarani and Harjinder also claimed silver and bronze, respectively, at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Other male lifters include Rishikanta Singh Chanambam (60kg), Muthupandi Raja (65kg), Ajith Narayana (71kg), Ajaya Babu Valluri (79kg), Abhishek Nipane (88kg), and Dilbag Singh (94kg).
