Patiala Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission Awards Compensation to Farmers for Losses Due to Spurious Seeds

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Patiala, under the leadership of President Sh. Pushvinder Singh and Member Sh. Gurdev Singh Nagi, has awarded compensation of Rs. 76,800 per acre to affected farmers for crop failure caused by the supply of spurious seeds by dealers Sham Trading Company, New Grain Market, Rajpura Town, and Rajpura Pesticides, Krishna Market, Rajpura Town. These dealers sourced the seeds from the manufacturer M/s Synergene Crop Innovations, Sri Krishna Enclave, Balajinagar, Kukatpally, Hyderabad. The award has been issued against both the dealers and the manufacturer. The key details of the case are as follows:
Farmers from various villages in Rajpura sub-division cultivated sunflower crops in 2022, but the crops failed due to the supply of spurious seeds by the local dealers.
These seeds were manufactured by M/s Synergene Crop Innovations, MIG 352/1, Flat No. 203, Sri Krishna Enclave, Balajinagar, Kukatpally, Hyderabad, whose license had expired in 2019, rendering them unauthorized to sell seeds in Punjab. The farmers suffered significant losses due to the crop failure.
The affected farmers filed a complaint with the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Patiala.

The case was heard by the bench of President Sh. Pushvinder Singh and Member Sh. G.S. Nagi, and on August 4, 2025, the decision was made in favor of the farmers.
The commission awarded relief of Rs. 76,800 per acre to the farmers who filed the complaints, along with an additional compensation of Rs. 35,000 per farmer.
Previously, the farmers had lodged a complaint with the Chief Minister of Punjab and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Patiala. Following this, a committee of experts was formed, which verified the authenticity of the complaint. Initially, a relief of Rs. 17,000 was provided to 20 farmers for losses across 88 acres of land. This amount has now been increased to Rs. 76,800 per acre by the District Consumer Commission, Patiala.
