Amidst the historical charm of Patiala, the Kalidas Auditorium came alive on Wednesday, resonating with the enchanting strains of classical music. The festival provided an unforgettable experience for music aficionados in the City Royale, renowned as the cradle of Hindustani classical music.
The evening was graced by Prof. (Dr.) Surinder Kapila, a distinguished senior vocalist of the Patiala Gharana, as the chief guest. Immersed in the sublime realm of music, the audience experienced a divine connection through the melodies performed.
Organized by the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), Patiala, the festival aims to revive and preserve the rich heritage of the Patiala Gharana, paying homage to its vibrant legacy.
The four-day musical extravaganza commenced with a captivating performance by the acclaimed classical vocalist Shantanu Bhattacharya of the Patiala Gharana. His flawless presentation of intricate bandishes in Khayal and Thumri styles, based on evocative evening ragas rooted in the traditions of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, drew widespread admiration from the elite of the music world.

The festival continues to feature a diverse lineup of classical music maestros. On December 19, Alankar Singh, Gunjan Channa, and Rajendra Prasanna will showcase their exceptional talents. Subsequent performances will include Uday Kumar Mallick and Ronkini Gupta on December 20, followed by Vidushi Anupama Bhagwat and Saurabh Vashisht on December 22. Each artist promises to mesmerize the audience with their mastery of classical vocals and instrumental music.
A standout highlight of the festival’s opening evening was the electrifying jugalbandi by the dynamic trio of Yogesh Shamsi (tabla), Tanmay Deochake (harmonium), and Rajendra Prasanna (flute). Their robust and rhythmic fusion captivated the audience, leaving them in awe of their musical synergy.
This festival not only celebrates the timeless art of Hindustani classical music but also reaffirms Patiala’s esteemed place in the world of Indian music.
