PEDA and IISc: Pioneering Green Hydrogen from Paddy Straw

Chandigarh, October 7
In a groundbreaking move to revolutionize Punjab’s green energy and agricultural sectors, the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, to establish a pioneering Pilot Demonstration Project for producing Green Hydrogen from biomass, with a focus on paddy straw.

Strategic Partnership

Under the visionary leadership of Punjab’s New & Renewable Energy Minister, Aman Arora, this collaboration transforms the challenge of paddy stubble management into a lucrative opportunity for sustainable energy production. The initiative aligns with Punjab’s commitment to clean energy innovation and a circular economy.

MoU Details

  • The MoU was signed by Neelima, Chief Executive Officer of PEDA, and the Registrar of IISc Bangalore.

  • The agreement was exchanged between Ms. Neelima and Prof. S. Dasappa of IISc’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research (ICER) during the 5th International Conference on Recent Advances in Bio-Energy Research at the Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE), Kapurthala.

  • The event was attended by Shripad Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy & Power, Government of India.

Objectives and Impact

Minister Aman Arora congratulated PEDA for this transformative partnership, emphasizing that the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is driving an energy revolution. He highlighted the project’s potential to:

  • Combat Stubble Burning: Convert agricultural waste, particularly paddy straw, into Green Hydrogen, reducing environmental pollution and improving air quality.

  • Boost Rural Economy: Create new revenue streams for farmers and generate employment in the green energy sector.

  • Promote Sustainability: Establish a facility to demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of Green Hydrogen production, supporting India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Punjab’s renewable energy goals.

  • Foster a Circular Economy: Empower farmers, clean the environment, and provide carbon-free energy for industries, paving the way for an energy-independent Punjab.

Minister’s Remarks

“This collaboration with IISc is a landmark step toward a sustainable future for Punjab,” said Aman Arora. “By turning agricultural waste into Green Hydrogen, we are addressing stubble burning, enhancing air quality, and creating economic opportunities for farmers, all while advancing our clean energy ambitions.”
