Punjab Achieves Record 25.31% GST Growth in May 2025, Signals Strong Economic Resilience
Chandigarh, June 1
Historic GST Collection Surge
Punjab has recorded an unprecedented 25.31% growth in net GST collection for May 2025, marking the highest-ever GST revenue for the month in the state’s history. The net GST revenue reached ₹2,006.31 crore, a significant rise of ₹405.17 crore compared to ₹1,601.14 crore in May 2024. This growth far surpasses the 8.17% increase (₹121 crore) seen in May 2024 over May 2023’s collection of ₹1,480 crore, reflecting a robust upward trend in Punjab’s fiscal health.
Leadership and Reforms Drive Success
Punjab’s Finance, Planning, Excise, and Taxation Minister, Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema, announced these figures on Sunday, attributing the achievement to the AAP Government’s strong tax administration, improved compliance, and economic resilience under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s leadership. He highlighted the government’s dedication to financial prudence and economic reforms as key drivers behind the consistent revenue growth.
Cheema noted that Punjab’s GST growth not only set a new state record but also outperformed the national average, positioning Punjab among the top states in tax mobilization. “We’ve strengthened tax enforcement, curbed evasion, and created a seamless taxation system that supports businesses while protecting state revenues,” he said.
Overcoming Challenges
This milestone is especially notable given Punjab’s challenges as a border state amid heightened India-Pakistan tensions and a war-like situation during the period. Despite these adversities, the state’s GST growth rate in May 2025 tripled the previous year’s 8.17%, showcasing remarkable resilience.

Key Enforcement Actions
The record growth was fueled by enhanced compliance, active taxpayer engagement, and stringent enforcement by the Taxation Department. Significant measures included:
- Physical verification of 195 fake firms, blocking ₹75.79 crore in fraudulent Input Tax Credit (ITC).
- Detection of tax evasion in the coal sector, uncovering off-book transactions worth over ₹225 crore and ₹11.65 crore in evaded tax.
- Exposure of ₹900 crore in bogus gold bullion transactions in Ludhiana, with ₹21 crore of ineligible ITC blocked.
Impact and Future Outlook
Minister Cheema praised the Taxation Department’s officers and field staff for their dedication and effective enforcement, noting that the additional revenue would bolster the state’s development initiatives and improve public service delivery. Looking ahead, the department aims to sustain this momentum into June 2025, building on a foundation of policy reform, administrative efficiency, and fiscal discipline to achieve even greater growth.
