Chandigarh, June 1

Major Crackdown on Drug Smuggling

On the 92nd day of the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign, launched under the directives of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to eliminate the drug menace in Punjab, Punjab Police arrested 113 drug smugglers on Sunday. The operation resulted in the seizure of 2.09 kg of heroin, 530 grams of opium, 32,679 intoxicant pills, and ₹1.8 lakh in drug money. This brings the total number of drug smugglers arrested in the 92-day campaign to 14,944.

Statewide Operation

The operation, conducted across all 28 police districts of Punjab, was overseen by Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav. Over 200 police teams, involving more than 1,400 personnel and supervised by 86 gazetted officers, raided 461 locations, leading to the registration of 83 First Information Reports (FIRs). Additionally, 382 suspicious individuals were checked during the day-long operation, as reported by Special DGP Law and Order, Arpit Shukla.

Government’s Commitment to a Drug-Free Punjab

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has directed Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents of Police to make Punjab a drug-free state. To strengthen this effort, the Punjab Government has formed a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, chaired by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to oversee the anti-drug campaign.

Three-Pronged Strategy: Enforcement, De-Addiction, Prevention

The state government has adopted a comprehensive three-pronged strategy— Enforcement, De-Addiction, and Prevention (EDP)—to eradicate drugs. As part of the de-addiction efforts, Punjab Police successfully convinced 92 individuals to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment on Sunday, contributing to the broader goal of rehabilitation and recovery.

Crackdown on Pharmaceutical Shops

In a parallel effort, police teams inspected 106 pharmaceutical shops across five districts—Fazilka, Ferozepur, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Faridkot, and Moga—to ensure compliance with regulations and prevent the sale of intoxicant tablets or habit-forming drugs. This initiative aims to curb the misuse of pharmaceutical products in the drug trade.
