Punjab Advancing Towards a Sustainable Future by Reducing Fossil Fuel Dependence: Aman Arora

  • Punjab shifts 6800 MW to renewable energy, transforms over 1000 government buildings into energy-efficient structures, says New & Renewable Energy Minister.

Chandigarh, December 21:

Punjab is actively working towards a sustainable future by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and embracing green energy. Highlighting this vision, Punjab’s Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Mr. Aman Arora, cited the profound words of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, “Pavan Guru Pani Pita, Mata Dharat Mahat” (Air is the teacher, water is the father, and earth is the great mother).

Addressing the State Energy Conservation Day event organized by the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) in collaboration with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Mr. Arora stressed the urgent need for collective efforts to combat climate change and protect the planet.

Major Achievements in Renewable Energy:

  • Punjab has successfully transitioned 6800 MW of energy to renewable sources, making over 1000 government buildings, including schools, energy-efficient.
  • A new project is underway to add another 6200 MW of renewable energy.
  • Over 216,000 energy-efficient, BEE 4-star-rated agricultural pump sets have been installed across the state.
  • More than 750 buildings in Punjab now comply with the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC).

Mr. Arora urged citizens to support the government’s initiatives, emphasizing that private sector participation is crucial in adopting energy-efficient technologies. He remarked, “Energy saved is energy generated,” underlining the importance of energy conservation for a sustainable future.

Inauguration of Energy Efficiency Exhibition:
The minister also inaugurated an exhibition showcasing energy efficiency technologies during the event.

Key Insights from Officials:

  • Principal Secretary for New and Renewable Energy, Mr. Ajoy Kumar Sinha, highlighted the critical role of energy conservation and efficiency in bridging the gap between power demand and supply. He called for judicious power usage and greater adoption of renewable energy sources.
  • PEDA Director, Mr. M.P. Singh, showcased the state’s achievements in energy conservation, including 85 capacity-building programs and pioneering efforts in incentivizing ECBC and green buildings. Punjab remains one of the top-performing states in energy efficiency initiatives.

Participation of Experts and Stakeholders:
The event also featured insights from GRIHA Council Deputy CEO Ms. Shabnam Bassi and Mr. Gaurav Mukhija, Vice President of Business Development for the Global Network for Zero. Senior officials from key departments like PSPCL, Water Supply and Sanitation, PWD, Local Government, Health, Medical Education, Research, and GMADA were also in attendance to celebrate the State Energy Conservation Day.

This celebration reinforced Punjab’s commitment to becoming a leader in energy efficiency and sustainable development.
