Urges Centre to Stop Interfering in Punjab’s Affairs

Amritsar, November 7

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today distributed appointment letters to 2,105 youth recruited by the Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) and Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited (PSTCL) during a ceremony at the Government Medical College auditorium in Amritsar. This brings the total number of government jobs provided under his administration to 58,962.

Mann emphasized that unemployment fuels social issues, and his government is committed to eradicating it. Since April 2022, 8,984 appointments have been made in PSPCL and PSTCL, including 2,023 linemen, 48 internal auditors, and 35 revenue accountants appointed today. He highlighted that all appointments are merit-based, free from the “cash and favor” practices of past governments, with no appointment challenged in court.

Drawing inspiration from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Mann urged youth to emulate the resilience of the Constitution’s architect to achieve excellence. He called on the newly appointed employees to serve with dedication, particularly for the underprivileged, and to act as a bridge between the government and the public.

Describing the government as a runway for youth to take off, Mann pledged support to help them realize their dreams. He stressed the importance of keeping youth engaged to steer them away from social evils like drugs, urging them to join the state’s anti-drug campaign.

Mann highlighted power sector reforms, noting that his government cleared Rs 2,000 crore of PSPCL’s debt. Since July 2022, 90% of households have received 600 units of free electricity, improving their financial stability. The government also restarted the Pachhwara coal mine, making Punjab coal-surplus, and acquired the GVK thermal plant in Goindwal Sahib for Rs 1,080 crore, renaming it after Sri Guru Amar Das Ji. Unlike past regimes that sold public assets, Mann said his government is investing in Punjab’s progress.

Criticizing previous governments for leaving Punjab with a Rs 2.75 lakh crore debt without contributing to development, Mann accused traditional parties of envying his common background. He claimed their leaders, educated in elite boarding schools, are disconnected from Punjab’s realities and have misled people since independence.

Mann also slammed the BJP-led central government for interfering in Punjab’s affairs, particularly citing the dissolution of Panjab University’s Senate and Syndicate as an attack on the state’s heritage. He opposed the Centre’s pressure to merge Haryana colleges with Panjab University and release additional Bhakra Dam water to Haryana and Rajasthan, asserting, “Punjab knows how to fight for its rights.”

The newly appointed youth expressed gratitude to Mann for the opportunities. PSPCL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Basant Garg and other dignitaries attended the event.
