Punjab Government and Farmers’ Unions Reach Consensus on Key Issues

In a significant development, the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, and representatives from farmers’ unions held a productive three-hour meeting, addressing key issues and reaching a general consensus.

The Punjab Government assured the farmer leaders that many of their demands have already been implemented, and efforts are underway to fulfill the remaining legitimate concerns.

The meeting, held at Punjab Bhawan, was attended by high-ranking officials from the Punjab Government and representatives from various farmers’ unions

Key Issues and Resolutions:

  • Jobs for Farmers’ Families: The government assured that out of 856 families of farmers who lost their lives during the farmers’ struggles, nearly 99 percent have already been provided government jobs or assistance. The remaining cases are being processed, and necessary steps will be taken to complete them soon.
  • Paddy Purchase: The Punjab Government committed to ensuring the purchase of every grain of paddy. Discussions with Aartis and Rice Mill owners are ongoing to address any outstanding issues.
  • Sugarcane Payments: Officials confirmed that all due payments to farmers by sugarcane mills have been made, except for the Phagwara sugarcane mill. Assurances were given that these payments will be processed soon.
  • Stray Animals: The government is forming a committee to address the issue of stray animals affecting farmers.
  • Drug Problem: Punjab Police officials reported that 26,000 persons have been arrested in drug trafficking cases, and no one is being spared, regardless of their position or social status.
  • Smart Electricity Meters: The government clarified that there are no plans to privatize the Power department, and concerns regarding smart electricity meters are being addressed.
