Punjab Police Foils Target Killings, Arrests Five Gang Members Linked to Bhagwanpuria and Batth

CHANDIGARH/TARN TARAN, December 29

The Punjab Police has averted potential target killings with the arrest of five members belonging to the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and Amritpal Batth gang. The arrests, made by Tarn Taran Police, also resulted in the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and ammunition.

Those apprehended are Gurmeet Singh alias Rawal (of village Bhagwanpur, Batala), Harpal Singh (of village Nurpur, Gurdaspur), Lovepreet Singh alias NP (of village Nawapind, Amritsar), Shamsher Singh alias Shera Passian, and Sandeep Singh alias Goli (both of Kot Khalsa, Amritsar).

Police recovered four weapons: a sophisticated US-made 9mm Glock pistol, two .32 bore pistols, and one locally made pistol, along with 15 live cartridges and three magazines. A Hyundai Creta car, used in criminal activities, was also impounded.

DGP Gaurav Yadav confirmed that the seized weapons were supplied by Jaggu Bhagwanpuria through an associate. The arrested individuals confessed to planning target killings on the instructions of gangster Amritpal Batth. The individuals have prior criminal records, including cases of attempted murder, illegal arms possession, and gang-related violence.

DGP Yadav also revealed that the investigation has yielded important information regarding a recent targeted murder in the Tarn Taran area carried out by the gang. Further investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of their criminal network.

SSP Tarn Taran Abhimanyu Rana provided details of the operation, stating that police teams, acting on intelligence about suspects traveling in a Hyundai Creta, established a checkpoint near Jandiala on the Tarn Taran road. This led to the initial arrest of Gurmeet Singh, Lovepreet Singh, and Harpal Singh. Interrogation of these individuals led to the subsequent arrest of Shamsher Singh and Sandeep Singh. SSP Rana commended the efforts of the police teams involved in the operation.

A case (FIR No. 232/24) has been registered at Police Station Sadar Tarn Taran under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
